Does Marriage Reduce Stress?

February 22, 2018

All marriages have their stress points, whether it’s arguments about finances or household responsibilities. Despite these challenges, a loving union between two people can do wonders for your overall well-being.

A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows that marriage can have a positive effect on your psychological health. In the study, researchers monitored the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in over 550 married and unmarried individuals. They found that married individuals had lower levels of stress and whenever their cortisol levels spiked it declined faster than unmarried individuals. The fast descent of cortisol levels after a stressful episode is associated with reduced risk of heart disease and longer survival among cancer patients. So marriage is beneficial for your physical health as well.

It isn’t just a marriage license that keeps stress at bay. A marriage filled with love, support, and communication is the true way to reap stress relief benefits. If you’re married and you want to connect with your spouse consider one of the three relaxation techniques listed below. You’ll have fun and reduce your stress at the same time.

  • Partner yoga. Yoga is a powerful, relaxing practice—it not only increases your flexibility, it also helps you become more connected with your body. Doing yoga with a partner will help enhance these benefits. Plus, with partner yoga, you can build trust and a deep connection with your spouse. If you’re looking for some suggestions of partner yoga poses try these examples.
  • Couple cooking night. Household responsibilities can add stress to your day. Fortunately, sharing chores, such as cooking, can help you bond with your partner and reduce stress. You can even make stress-reducing meals such as grilled salmon with mango salsa. You can find more helpful recipes here. Remember: the couple that cooks together stays together.
  • DIY couple massages. The act of touching someone you love, whether it’s a hug or holding hands, is known to reduce stress. Giving your spouse a massage can also further reduce your stress. If you take your time and use quality massage oil, you can give an amazing massage that your partner will love.
